Carondelet Park Recreation Complex / Carondelet Family YMCA
Feasibility Study and design of a new recreation complex for the City of St. Louis through a partnership between the Department of Parks Recreation & Forestry and the YMCA.

The study of the community on the south side of the City determined a need for new indoor and outdoor recreational activities. Carondelet Park was chosen as the site for the Southside Community Center.

The project includes an indoor leisure pool as well as a large outdoor aquatic complex and bathhouse. Also included is an indoor 2-court gymnasium, a large fitness area, indoor walking/jogging track, multipurpose rooms, Senior Citizen area, and public gathering spaces. The building and outdoor pools are situated adjacent to a major highway leading to downtown St. Louis presenting a dynamic facade to those passing by, while taking advantage of the steep grade to visually and acoustically screen patrons using the outdoor pool from the passing traffic.

When viewed from the park the project takes on a different scale. Low one story elements with overhangs and covered walkways in brick and stone lend a sympathetic massing to the beautiful park setting.
