Renaud Center - Recreation Complex
The building form was spun off the existing circle entry drive, is laid out to command a visual presence from the distant highway as well as present the visual energy of the recreation and fitness building program. The curved forms and planes, representing simple curves of physical motion, overlap and spring over each other to produce opportunities of dynamic space and light.

The lower east-west curve, grounded into the landscape, is masonry-bearing construction and contains all the functional components of the program (offices, locker rooms, multipurpose events room, arts & crafts, and baby sitting). The two outer ‘heavy’ brick masonry walls, which are reinforced by site features and geometry, run through the entire project providing a means of orienting and engaging users as they pass through and along the building.
By contrast, the higher arching structure made up of exposed steel frame, metal panels, and glass contains the larger programmatic volumes (gymnasium, natatorium, and fitness areas). High transparent vertical glazing allows the repetitive lacy nature of the steel roof structure to flex the roof plane from the skin of the walls, further emphasizing the dynamic nature of sports. In addition, the larger volumes are oriented to maximize natural daylight into all the primary spaces (north daylight for the gymnasium and south daylight for the natatorium).
