Crestwood Aquatic Center at Whitecliff Park
Situated next to an existing community center in a beautifully wooded park, this project included development of a new bathhouse and outdoor aquatic center to replace an outdated 50 M Pool. Project scope also included 4 new tennis courts, playground, picnic shelters, 500 seat amphitheater and parking.
As the gateway to a new outdoor family aquatic center, the bathhouse sets the tone for the entire park development with its simple forms and detailing. As one enters the park, the building becomes a simple garden wall, clearly defining the progression into the pool area. As one passes through the central building control element, the architecture explodes in a playful gesture framing views of key pool components beyond. The large canopy allows shelter for the pool patrons during inclement weather. Translucent poly-carbonate wall panels flood the building with “controlled” natural light, minimizing the need for artificial lighting in the locker rooms and office areas.
The aquatic facility includes a tot pool which is carved into the hillside, a small play pool which ties into a 500 foot lazy river, a splashdown pool with a lily pad walk, and a 25 yd x 25 m multipurpose competition pool. The pools are organized by activity type and target age groups. Wave shaped shade structures blend sloped roof elements to create a dynamic and playful environment for the patrons.
The layout of the complex takes advantage of the existing contours of the site affording strong interaction between pool elements and allowing wonderful views to the east. The aquatic complex was designed into the hillside and integrated with the existing woods to the west. Special fencing was utilized around the aquatic complex because of its transparent quality. Great care was taken with the existing trees as the pool was pushed into the woods.
