Recreation Station Ice Arena, Kirkwood, Missouri
Recreation Station Ice Arena
Project included replacement of an outdated, covered outdoor ice rink adjacent to an existing community center, with a new 40,000 sf indoor facility. To reduce cost, the existing steel roof structure of the open-air rink was retained and extended as part of the structure for a new enclosed ice facility. The existing ice rink surface was lowered 2’ for added vertical clearance, extended from 185’ to 200’ and included a new refrigeration system.
Concrete block walls (which match the original building) were used like “garden walls” to reduce the massiveness of the ice rink volume which is at the edge of a large city park. Expansive glass and translucent wall panels were strategically placed to bring an abundance of natural light into the facility without degrading the quality of ice. The design includes a new entry for the arena and adjacent community center, new ice rink with elevated bleachers (400 seats), warming room with fireplace, skate rental, offices, concessions area and dining, party room and locker/shower rooms.
