Recreation Station Aquatic Center, Kirkwood, Missouri
Recreation Station Aquatic Center
A cooperative effort between the cities of Kirkwood, Glendale and Oakland, the Recreation Station Aquatic Center was the first municipal partnership in Missouri and one of only a few in the nation at the time the project was completed.
The design related to all three communities by drawing on a rich railroad history that dates back to the 1800's. Patrons enter the complex through the main bathhouse, which is reminiscent of the historic Kirkwood train station, a familiar landmark located in the heart of Kirkwood’s downtown business district. The nearby concessions building resembles a railroad car. Other design cues include signal towers, covered bridges and water towers. The complex encompasses four main water features: a family play pool with a themed water playground; a passive adult pool with open water, shade structures and built-in benches; a 700- foot lazy river that meanders through caves and rock waterfalls; and a 25- meter-by-25-yard competitive pool for Kirkwood’s active swim, diving and water polo teams. A separate water slide area serves as a focal point for activity in the leisure pool area, while rock waterfalls bridge the pools and enhance the natural effect of the facility.
