The Centre
A 6-acre lake located adjacent to the Health and Recreation Center was incorporated into the project to provide relief from storm water run-off issues to neighboring residents, but also serves as an extension of the City’s recreation facilities.

This 63,000 sf facility was strategically sited in the existing 120-acre Ber Juan Park to maximize views and openness from within the facility, while minimizing the visual impact of the large building volumes in the park. Simple roof planes articulate a sculptural form within the park so as to eliminate a visual imbalance between building and landscape while low profile roof lines reduce the mass of the building when viewed from across the park.
Organization, massing, and careful selection of building materials (such as local Missouri sandstone, wood and brick) were used to convey a design which is sympathetic with the surrounding park. Primary exterior building materials were selected to bridge the contemporary form and nature of the facility with the natural Ozark setting. Long, clerestory windows allow the expansive roof plane to “float” over the spaces below. The roof plane peels open above the fitness area drawing natural light further into the building. Large expanses of glass were utilized to provide views into the picturesque park while more fully integrating building and site.

The building includes an indoor aquatic center, multipurpose gymnasium, walking/jogging
track, fitness center, multipurpose rooms, aerobics studio, and leased space for regional hospital wellness programs. The facility is adjacent to the newly renovated Outdoor Family Aquatic Center.
